In the grand, classic Mughal tradition, a lush design of swaying vines, leaves, and palmettes undulates gracefully across the field of this superb antique Agra.Antique Agra Rug, Origin: India, Circa: Late 19th Century – In the grand, classic Mughal tradition, a lush design of swaying vines, leaves, and palmettes undulates gracefully across the rich red field of this superb antique Agra. The curling ‘sickle’ leaves are the hallmark of the ‘Herati‘ pattern in its classic Indo-Persian form, as are the lovely, sinuous cloud-bands derived from Chinese court carpets and textiles. A distinctive repeating pattern of palmettes flanked by sickle leaves comprises the main border, set against a gold ground in pleasing contrast to the field. Seldom do late nineteenth-century Agra’s capture so well the effect and presence of the classical Mughal carpets that inspired them.
